Risk factors for high herd level calf morbidity risk from birth to weaning in beef herds in the USA.

چکیده
We analyzed data from a national survey of beef cow-calf producers in the USA to quantify the effects of hypothesized risk factors on herd-level calf morbidity risk from birth to weaning. The analysis included 2490 herds from 23 states. Two stepwise logistic regressions were fit to identify factors associated with ≥10% morbidity. The first model included all herds dichotomized into high-morbidity herds with ≥10% morbidity and low-morbidity herds with <10% morbidity. The second model excluded herds with between 5 and 10% morbidity, and compared >/=10% morbidity with 70% of cows and heifers calves in confinement also increased the odds of being a high-morbidity herd (OR=1.8). The population attributable fractions for dystocia and confined calving for the model including all herds dichotomized at 10% morbidity were 0.41 and 0.11, respectively. The summary population attributable fraction for both factors was 0.46.

An evaluation of bias in estimated breeding values for weaning weight in Angus beef cattle field records. I. Estimates of within herd genetic trend.
Genetic trends for weaning weight were evaluated in 15 purebred herds in the United States participating in the Angus Herd Improvement. Records production testing program. Regression techniques were used for separate estimates of sire and dam contributions that were summed to estimate total herd trend. Sire contributions, calculated as the pooled within sire regression of weaning weight ratio o...

Lundborg, K. 2004. Housing, management and health in Swedish dairy calves. Doctor’s dissertation. ISSN 1401-6257, ISBN 91-576-6656-3 This thesis discusses the results of an observational study conducted in dairy herds in the south-western Sweden and a questionnaire survey of dairy herds done throughout Sweden. In the observational study the health of 3 081 heifer calves in 122 dairy herds was m...
متن کاملUdder health in beef cows and its association with calf growth
BACKGROUND Studies outside the Nordic countries have indicated that subclinical mastitis (measured by milk somatic cell count or the California Mastitis Test), intramammary infections (IMI), or blind quarters in beef cows may have negative effects on beef calf growth. Knowledge on prevalence of such udder health problems in Swedish beef cows is scarce. Therefore, the main aim of this study was ...
متن کاملFactors for improving reproductive performance of sows and herd productivity in commercial breeding herds
We review critical factors associated with reproductive performance of female breeding pigs, their lifetime performance and herd productivity in commercial herds. The factors include both sow-level and herd-level factors. High risk sow-level groups for decreasing reproductive performance of female pigs are low or high parity, increased outdoor temperature, decreased lactation feed intake, singl...
متن کاملModelling the spread of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) in a beef cattle herd and its impact on herd productivity
Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a common pathogen of cattle herds that causes economic losses due to reproductive disorders in breeding cattle and increased morbidity and mortality amongst infected calves. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of BVDV spread on the productivity of a beef cow-calf herd using a stochastic model in discrete time that accounted for (1) the difference in tr...
